PROJECT DETAILS:

The clients’ request for an urban refuge above the city began with an unfinished 7th floor penthouse in the heart of Portland’s Pearl District. The historic Crane Building, established in 1909, reveals views of the city, its bridges, and the West Hills. The building’s historic status restricted changes to the exterior envelope, its windows, and doors.
Frequent entertaining demanded a functional, yet open living, dining, and kitchen area, as well as a media area that doubles as a work space. A custom sliding Sapele wood screen at the entry provides privacy for the bedrooms while the owners are entertaining in the next room. The most notable feature of the open living space is the original, vaulted, cedar wrapped ceiling which maximizes daylight, gives warmth to the space, and accentuates the unusual ceiling angles.
