Set on a compact corner infill lot in Northwest Portland, the Thurman House overlooks the city’s industrial northwest district and was designed for an active professional couple. The home responds to its constrained urban setting with an efficient L-shaped plan that wraps around a private interior courtyard, creating a quiet outdoor retreat protected from the activity of the surrounding streets.
Despite its compact footprint, the house feels open and expansive. Large windows and strategically placed clerestories bring daylight deep into the interior, while a vaulted ceiling gives the primary living space added volume and a strong connection to the sky. Along the street edge, concrete landscape walls extend the architecture into the site, providing privacy while defining a layered transition between the public realm and the home.
Simple shed-roof volumes give the house a clear, understated form. The exterior is composed of vertical cedar siding and smooth accent panels, organized by a continuous horizontal datum that wraps the building. This line marks the transition between the darker, more substantial cedar base and the lighter panels above, bringing scale, continuity, and a deliberate sense of order to the composition.
